The Wyndham Rio Barra is a fine hotel. It is indeed in Rio de Janeiro, but note that it's in Barra, a developed and pleasant residential area within city limits that is 15 km away from the heat and hustle you think of in Rio. The hotel is sunny and spacious, and they've wisely spent money on the presentation, from the stolid entryway to the bright and exciting foyer and lobby. The pool is sublime, and the rooms have balconies ... most offer a view of something, whether the ocean, the pool, the mountains on the horizon ....
The breakfast is functional but not elaborate.
This is a fine place to stay, and I was happy to get a good, last-minute rate in an extended size room. It's not luxury, but it's a great base to enjoy the sand and surf of the Rio area.

The facilities (rooms, bathrooms) are in poor condition. I had to move out because I didn’t feel comfortable sleeping and showering (and using the sheets/towels) given the conditions. The sink was clogged and the countertops were falling apart.
The beach is really close (across the street) and they were flexible enough to give me the room very early (8am)! I appreciate that.
I think if they inject some money and upgrade the rooms and linens at least will be better.
