About this house rental

River front home on a peaceful forested property with a private fishing and swimming hole, located on the Winchuck River in Southern Oregon, 6 miles from the Pacific Ocean, 10-15 miles south of Brookings, Harris Beach and Samuel H. Boardman, and 20-25 miles north of Crescent City, The Smith River and Redwood National Park.

Experience a coastal river valley micro climate with warm, fog-free summers, or winter storm watch and see the river rise while warming yourself by the wood burning fireplace.

The guest space is 1250 square feet, it consists of the entire upstairs of a two story split-level house with a private entrance, and two bathrooms and two bedrooms that sleeps up to 4 people. The master bedroom, full kitchen, living room and deck have excellent views of the river.

The master bedroom has a king-size bed and a private full bath with a jacuzzi tub and a separate shower. The smaller bedroom has a queen-size bed. The second bathroom is in the hallway near the smaller bedroom. It has a bathtub / shower combo.

There is seating for 4 to dine at the kitchen island. On the private 450 square feet, there is a gas grill and a picnic table for outdoor dining.

Our property consists of two parcels, a 1/4 acre parcel where the house is located, with a maintained yard, lawn and garden with fruit trees (cherry, peach, plum and apple) and a second adjacent parcel that is about 1-3/4 acres, which is on the downriver side of the house. It a narrow strip of undeveloped land between the river and the road.

The views from the house are mostly of the river, forest and timber land, but fom the deck you can see the upriver neighbor's house directly next door, which is on a 1/4 acre property, and through a veil of trees the house directly across the river, which is on a 2 acre property.

You can see the road from the house through a veil of trees. Winchuck River Rd has very light traffic, but you can hear some cars and trucks go by during the day. It is mostly people who live in the neighborhood commuting to and from work, or the school bus.

Other than that, you will hear the sound of birds and the river. The house and property is very quiet, and very peaceful.

Guests have access to the entire upstairs*,

Guests have access to the entire yard.

Guests can access and use the river area in front of the house**.

*PLEASE NOTE: Guests do not have access to the garage, or the downstairs which is a basement apartment that the hosts occasionally allow personal guests to stay. The downstairs basement apartment has a private entrance separate from the upstairs.

**PLEASE NOTE: Guests can only access and use the river in front of our property, which is in front of the house and downriver from there approximately 300 yards (down to the next pool). The opposite side of the river from the house, and in front of the neighbor's houses upriver is private property (please see the rental agreement for more information on using the river, and the property map located at the house for more details on property lines).

About the internet and cell service at the property:

There is high speed fiber optic wireless internet at the house, but please be aware, there is no cell service from about the 1 mile marker on Winchuck River Rd, and unless your are Verizon customer, no cell service at the property. There is a cell booster at the house that provides Verizon customers with good cell service. If you are not a Verizon customer we recommend using Face Time audio or another wifi calling option. If you are not sure how to set up wifi calling on your phone there is detailed instructions at the house.

About the Winchuck River area:

The house is located on Winchuck River Rd. which is a very well maintained two-lane county road nestled between the Winchuck River, timber land, agriculture / grazing land and rural residential neighborhoods.

The Winchuck River is a short free-flowing coastal stream that supports chinook salmon, steelhead and sea run cutthroat trout.

The head waters of its tributaries start in the rugged Siskiyou Mountains and go through the Kalmiopsis Wilderness, one of the largest wilderness areas in Oregon, which stretches all the way to the I-5 corridor.

The Winchuck is the southern-most stream on the Oregon Coast, its drainage contains some of the last remaining old growth redwood forests in Oregon.

Summers are mostly dry, day time temperatures can be between mid 60's to 80's, sometimes 90's. The property is above the fog line, and protected from the prevailing north wind which can make the temperature at the coast in low 60's and 6 miles away at the property it can be in the 80's. In peak summer the temperature of the river is in the mid 60's.

Winter can be weeks of rain or weeks of high pressure and sunshine, or there could be a stormy pattern mixed with a couple days of rain followed by a day of sun, followed by a couple more days of rain, and so on. A warm day in winter would be the mid 60's, but averages in the 50's. Nights are colder, there can be frost in the mornings. It will snow once every few years. Fall can have some of the nicest days of the year, there are some fall colors, with the vine maple and big leaf maple.

This is a rural area, so some sights and sounds you might encounter are the occasional chainsaw or lawn mower, or in deer season someone sighting in their hunting rifle off in the distance. Expect the occasional brush burn pile in spring or fall.

In winter, take care during and after big storms and avoid being under big trees due to falling limb potential. Fallen limbs may also be on the road (which are usually cleared very quickly by the road department or a neighbor with a chainsaw commuting to work).

You may see a black bear, a herd of elk, or a bald eagle. You will most likely see deer (be careful of deer on the road). And while mountain lion are very rarely seen (there hasn't been an incident between a person and mountain lion that we know of in Curry County) please be aware that this is their territory.
