About this castle / palace rental

The Castle of Ronciglione has gone through five centuries of history. Today, keeping its light and strength intact, it offers a refined journey into the past with an elegant and relaxed welcome.
Erected in the early Middle Ages by the Prefects of Vico to guard the only natural access to the city, in the following centuries it often changed ownership, destination and shape. It was the prerogative of the Counts of Anguillara, Della Rovere and Farnese from 1526 to 1649, under the ownership of the Della Rovere the Castle underwent major changes, in particular between 1475 and 1480 with the renovation commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV and entrusted to Florentine architect Giovanni Dolci who modified it by adding the circular keep and the four fortified towers at the corners, which also gave the castle its current popular name "I Torrioni". Most eminent personalities stayed here, including Pope Sixtus IV and Pope Paul III. In 1649 it became the property of the Holy See which ceded it in 1756 to the Genoese Girolamo Marè, who committed himself to its conservation and embellishment.

Being tourists, we were here and there. So we didn’t enjoy the friendly, open welcome. Ronciglione is a must, as is the castle. Thank you. Mille gracia

In the center of a rustic village – one hour drive north of Rome – lies the Castello del Ronciglione. The oldest parts of the Castello is from early medieval times, but it also has two newly renovated apartments that you can rent – you should do so if you get the chance. I decided to celebrate my 50th birthday here together with my family, and it became a wonderful memory for life. The modern apartments had new bathrooms and a well-equipped kitchen. The Guilia apartment with its wonderful medieval ceiling and interior had the perfect atmosphere if you want to feel like you’re living like a medieval lord. The region that the village of Ronciglione is situated in – called Tuscia – is not one of your regular tourist haunts. We were the only non-italian speakers that we were aware of during our stay there. So be prepared that most of the locals don’t speak anything but Italian - but they make up for it by speaking a lot… :) Within walking distance from the Castello, we found a number of top notch restaurants and eating out a couple of times every day was among the highlights of our days. Don’t miss Il Divino’s rooftop restaurant or the many lovely restaurants located on the shores of the nearby Lago Di Vico. You can spend your days at the lake (5-minute drive, sandy beaches and relaxing) or explore the countryside, visit the exceptional Villa Farnese that’s just a 15-minute drive from the village. You can golf, bike, hike or chill on the terrace at the Castello. Federico and his family who rents out the apartments live on the top floor of the Castello and they were truly fantastic in helping us fulfill our wishes. They helped with purchases and bookings and were always there for helpful tips, questions or a guided tour of the Castello. They couldn't have been better hosts. So, as long as going up and down a couple of stairs every day doesn’t bother you too much, this is a truly wonderful place for experiencing small town Italy within a historical setting. It was one of our best vacations ever.
