Sarah and Michael are wonderful hosts. We embarked on a "quest" to research our Italian relatives. They departed the Casoli, Abruzzo, Italy, area in the late 1800's for America and never returned. Sadly, half the family never made the journey to the US. We were attempting to find something about those left behind. We were also seeking details about my wife's grandfather who departed Italy as a 10-year-old boy. We are from Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Selecting the Atherton's home was a shot in the dark. What a stroke of luck! We became friends in 4 days. They were accommodating and helpful beyond all expectations. The special care and attention to our 12-year-old granddaughter by both Sarah and Mike cut through natural shyness making our granddaughter a full participant in the holiday. The setting is magnificent. Deep valleys and towering mountains surround Casoli. The old villages perch on hilltops. From the apartment there is a "killer" view from every window. The ambience is incredible. The night is silent; there is not one sound. The lights from the mountain towns create a "fairy tale" feeling. The property was immaculate. The bed was comfortable witnessed by a good night's sleep. The clear, cool nights helped too. The full-service kitchen produced a good breakfast. Sarah provides a starter set of croissants, eggs, fruit, and olive oil (essential in Abruzzo cooking). It was a wonderful week. Sarah and Michael were major contributors to our experience. A few relatives are still missing. Perhaps next year. Observations: Unknown to us, World War II was fought in Abruzzo. Casoli was part of the German defense of Italy, the Gustave Line. This is a forgotten part of the war (for Americans at least). The Allied participation was largely British and Commonwealth troops. The Americans were on the west coast in Anzio and Salerno marching on Rome. Memorials and cemeteries commemorating the Allied sacrifice in liberating Italy are found in several of the villages. Abruzzo prospered in the Middle Ages. Proof is in the castles and villages build during that period. This is another reason for a return trip. We had a day set aside for sight seeing. Our granddaughter voted for the beach. That’s where we went. While the water is cool, it was a warm sunny day on the beach. George, Carole, and Anasara
