You don't have to drive far off SH1 to find us but you'll be amazed at the beautiful and quiet location. It's a great place to relax with the nice hot shower and comfortable bed, perfect for a good night's sleep.
An easy drive to Cape Reinga at the top of New Zealand and close to Ninety Mile Beach, Protea Park Cottage is situated on our 30 acre farm where King Proteas are grown for the export market.
Overlooking a picturesque pond, the cute and cosy cottage is a quiet haven with its sheltered deck allowing all weather cooking on the BBQ.
The large fridge/freezer and well equipped kitchen make meal preparation easy and it's a short drive to local restaurants for sit down service or takeaways.
Rabbits, hares, pheasants, wild turkeys, quail and other creatures roam with the horses among the protea adding to the experience of kiwi rural life.
A short drive takes you to either magnificent white sand east coast beaches or 90 Mile Beach on the dramatic west coast. If you venture into the forest around dusk or dawn it’s very likely you will spot a herd of wild horses.
For the keen fisherman or golfer – wow!! It’s all here in the far north, come and see. Fish prep and hose down area on site.
Ample parking for boats, trailers, horse floats, cars etc.
It's nice to just walk around the property, always something interesting to see. The pond is home to several ducks with a few wild ones popping in to visit each day and it's just a short walk across a bridge to the back of the farm where the horses usually live. You can walk among the King Protea to the highest point of the farm from where you will be able to see the Houhora Harbour.
The woodburner and endless supply of firewood ensure you a cosy stay if you visit in winter and fans will keep you cool in summer.
Look forward to seeing you soon :)

I rarely write such extravagant reviews, but Protea Park Cottage and host Polly are truly special. This is one of the very best places I have ever stayed, in any country. The cottage is on several acres of land, next to Polly’s and husband Geoffrey’s house. The property is beautiful, and I got to know all three of their dogs – Ted, Dora, and Scout – each one free to roam and each one friendlier and more affectionate than the other. Polly’s 32-year-old mare, Sjayn, was also a sweetheart. The cottage itself was spacious, spotless, and equipped with everything anyone could need. And Polly was a warm, friendly, helpful, amazing host, bringing me home-grown fruit and inviting me to join her and Geoffrey and three of their friend couples for a lovely evening picnic by the sea. The cottage is also just a one-hour drive, along a well-paved road, to Cape Reinga. I can’t say enough about Polly, the cottage, the grounds, or the location. Simply a picture-perfect stay.
