Crete: Crete is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It forms a significant part of the economy and cultural heritage of Greece; while it retains its own local cultural traits (such as its own dialect, poetry, and music). Crete was the center of the Minoan civilization (circa 2700–1420 BC), the first civilization in Europe and the first European country with a palace (at Knossos).
Crete is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Greece. Today, the island's tourism infrastructure caters to all tastes, including a very wide range of accommodation. Popular tourist attractions include the archaeological sites of the Minoan civilisation, the Venetian old city and port of Rethymnon and Chania, the Venetian castle at Rethymno, the gorge of Samaria, the islands of Chrysi, Elafonisi, Gramvousa, and Spinalonga.

Rethymnon: The Prefecture of Rethymno is the heart of the island of Crete and is one of the most beautiful places in Greece. Rethymno awaits you with clear blue seas and Mount Psiloritis, there are traces of a civilisation that dates back 4,500 years, numerous Byzantine churches and monasteries, enchanting Venetian monuments, the most well-preserved Renaissance city in Greece, with endless beaches, caves, gorges and unique flora and fauna.Rethymno and its villages are live postcards, which are pervaded by the aroma of Cretan cuisine and the sound of the Cretan lyre. People live here amidst nature and emotions, outside the code of behavior found in big cities. No matter where you go be it even to the most isolated village, our people will open their doors to you to treat you to a 'tsikoudia' and befriend you.Rethymno is the homeland of Zeus the god of Hospitality. The visitors who return repeatedly confirms the words of the poet: Rethymno is not a place where you go to but a place where you return

We had an absolutely amazing stay at Alkistis Villa. It was clean and spacious for the 6 of us. My husband and I stayed for 2 weeks while our 2 daughters and their significant others joined us for 1 week. The view is remarkable and will stay with us for a very long time. The location was in a quiet area that is a quick drive to beaches and tavernas. Nikos and Roula were friendly, attentive and easy to get in touch with. We took their recommendations for some local tavernas and we were so happy we did! It was an absolute pleasure to meet them and stay in their villa!

We loved every minute at the villa! The views are mesmerising and the kids enjoyed roaming around the house, playing with the cats, and swimming in the pool. It was the most relaxed we have been in a long time. Thank you to the hosts!

We had a fantastic, relaxing stay at this villa. The view from the pool and roof terraces are amazing! A car is required for trips to the beach, bars and restaurants - we enjoyed a mix of evenings and lunches out and many at home bbqs. Thanks to Roula and Nikos for being wonderful hosts

Nikos met us at Platanias and drove us through the Adelianos olive valley and up the Ag. Paraskevi hill where on the slope hangs magnificently Alkistis, the Villa!Happy we took a tour. We found it as it’s described and a bit more interesting. Spectacular views from either the ground floor even the living room and the kitchen or the veranda in the first floor; each and every room strategically equipped with 1 or 2 window screens so the sea and mountain breeze come in freely cooling the villa naturally while insects stay out; all rooms equipped with air-conditioning units; the villa is spic-n-span clean. When friendly Nikos and Argyro went home, we were left with the feeling we had just bought a brand-new villa even for a short period of a week! The owners were very helpful to recommend close-by beaches for a good swim like Platanias, Gerani; inexpensive restaurants to enjoy good, traditional Cretan cuisine where the locals eat, like Taverna Zisis, which we highly recommend; and Taverna Galera by the sea, where we enjoyed fine, plentiful fresh sea-food next to the water; stores we could buy traditional Cretan food items and pastry like Savoidakis, Nyktaris, etc.The old city of Rethymnon is only 5 miles close. We visited every evening and stayed out all night having fun, making new friends, enjoying a drink, buying souvenirs. We visited “Meli” for assorted flavors of velvety ice-cream; “Kritika Proionta” for buying Cretan food specialties; “Gaias Gefseis” for enjoying traditional Cretan pastries and delicious Greek coffee to order; “GEM Jewels” for buying watches, jewelry of exquisite taste at bargain prices, and more…The villa is ideally located in the center of the island. Adventurous people are less than 2 hours drive close to significant places like Knossos and Phaistos for the history buffs, bustling old cities of Rethymnon and Chania for the trinket lovers, Matala for fr. hippies (folks over 60…) and sympathizers, the heroic Arkadi Monastery, the Samaria gorgeous gorge or so many inviting golden sandy or pebble beaches all around the island.Greece including Crete is still inexpensive. Cretan beaches are inviting and refreshing, Cretan food is healthy, delicious and fair-priced, people are friendly, tsikoudia runs plentiful. Money-wise Alkistis Villa was a bargain for us 2 people having the whole villa to ourselves. For 2-3 couples or a big family is even a bigger one. We’re making plans already for visiting again soon.
