Friendly welcoming members of staff. Our nights stay was because our son was running the marathon and because the roads into Brighton were all closed on race day it meant getting our son to the start point was going to prove difficult. However the lady behind the bar helped us by offering her son as a driver and we didnt get charged an arm and a leg. This gesture was appreciated.
I should point that our booking was very last minute as he had booked a hotel nearer the centre of Brighton but within minutes of arriving there we realised that it was an awful mistake. The decor of the original booking was terrible, the staff were rude and unhelpful, so the Gather Inn having a room available was really lucky and it was like chalk and cheese compared to our original choice. Clean, tidy and with friendly people.

The location suited our needs and we had a nice view of the sea.
The bar shuts early. We picked this place as we were popping into Brighton for a meal then back for a few drinks but the bar shuts early not to disturb guests which is a great idea but the information regarding the early closure needs to be more obvious as we wouldn't of stayed if we knew it was an early close. We only get out a few times a year for a meal and drinks so this let it down a bit for us.
