We stayed on the chance to see the volcano’s eruption. It paused off! Saw it at 1:48 in the morning and went back to bed. But had to park .06 miles away because the parking fills up at the hotel if you’re not parked by 5 pm. Oh yeah, odd number rooms face the volcano can see it from your room.

Best spot for viewing the eruption, we saw it at 1:48 in the morning and went back to bed. But everything is public parking, so be parked by 5 pm. I parked .6 miles away at sulfur springs at 6:30 pm.

Beautiful historic building full of character.
The things that caught us out were:
1. We were in a room facing the carpark (absolutely useless for volcano watching). All “standard rooms” face the car park.
2. The bathroom door is tiny and upon arriving we actually didn’t know there was a bathroom in our room. (There are toilets down the hall in lodge like fashion but no showers). Huge relief!
3. Restaurant is great. The food is well priced and tasty. The restaurant looks out over the volcano.
4. Loads of great walks, views and places to explore in the park. We are so pleased we went (although didn’t quite time it right with an eruption).
5. Finally, the room smelt musty. I guess this is part of the historic charm. It is an older builder is is without air conditioning.

Good restaurant, great place to stay to enjoy nature and the Kilaeau Caldera . Basic room , no frill , no TV, no AC , no refrigerator or microwave in the room.
