About this house rental

Crosbie has large open plan living spaces and full width sliding/folding to the small deck, and a contemporary open fireplace in the lounge area. There are four bedrooms, kitchen with range cooker and granite worktops, with character reclaimed wooden floorboards throughout complimenting the modern décor, all behind the original restored Edwardian shell. Perfect family cottage for beach breaks and New Forest holidays.

Crosbie is located at the south west corner of the New Forest, about a mile from the beautiful beaches at Highcliffe and only half a mile from the New Forest National park itself. Chewton common is close by, as is the wonderful spa, restaurant and small golf course at the well known Chewton Glen Hotel. As well as the forest and the beaches virtually on your doorstep, Christchurch and Bournemouth are just a short direct drive from this New Forest Cottage.

Crosbie Cottage owes its name to Annette Crosbie, Margaret Meldrew in ‘One Foot in the Grave’, which was filmed here. Margaret and Victor Meldrew’s house was located just around the corner, and this cottage is featured in the 1991 One Foot in The Grave Christmas Special, covered in snow.

During the restoration and refurbishment works the whole roof was removed, along with many interior walls, the back wall taken down and the house extended on both floors, doubling the floorspace on the ground floor, meanwhile the front elevation was restored to it’s former glory, wooden sliding sash windows reinstated and the whole exterior repointed as well as a new roof built. The contemporary design of the rebuild and extension is reflected throughout the interiors, with large open plan spaces, full width sliding/folding doors to the garden, contemporary open fireplace and reclaimed timber floorboards throughout.

Walkford is a small village, with a couple of pubs within a few hundred yards in either direction, and a good convenience store at the end of the road. Highcliffe is within easy walking distance, where you’ll find a good selection of restaurants and takeaways, as well as a handful of pubs, tea rooms, coffee shops, supermarket, antique shops and other shops. Just beyond the main street you’ll come to the cliff top and sandy beach, where there’s a quality cafe/bar/ restaurant open in the daytime and evening with fantastic views.

Crosbie is the perfect base to discover the south west New Forest or venture further along the Dorset coast for a day.

The kitchen/dining/living space has plenty of space for everyone to dine or just relax together at the table. There is a cosy central fireplace for winter and the full width sliding folding doors accessing the deck and small garden, wonderful when the weather turns warmer.

At one end of the room is the kitchen, which has fitted units with stone granite surfaces providing ample workspace and storage. There is a range cooker with oven, a freestanding fridge/freezer, integrated dishwasher and washer. The base and wall units house the cooking and dining equipment for the stay.

The lounge space at the other end has sliding/ folding doors to the deck, and a contemporary fireplace, with large settees facing each other so everyone can socialise and relax in comfort. There’s a television.

There are four bedrooms at this large cottage. All are double rooms, with one bedroom is set up as a twin room with two single beds. The two larger front bedrooms each have an original fireplace a pleasant street view, one is on the ground floor. The two smaller back bedrooms have views across the gardens behind, and one of these bedrooms includes a desk and wardrobe.

The modern bathroom has a double ended bath, heated towel rail, wc and basin. Downstairs, the contemporary shower room has a shower, wc and basin.

I was very stressed at not having the actual address until a day before we set off, especially as the landlord had stated no refunds and I had visions of trying to sort out a mess caused by not having the exact place we were going. However, felt happier when the information finally arrived - note for the future - perhaps that info could be sent with the confirmation of booking?

Great location for walk to beach. Front is tired and garden needed tidying. Back garden very small- not great for children or sitting as a group outside for meals. Parking is on the road. Inside is spacious with good size kitchen, dining and lounge areas though 2 of the 4 bedrooms very cramped. One has no wardrobe, another has two single beds but they are child width so adults have an uncomfortable night. Blinds at the windows have holes and need renewing in two of the bedrooms. Great cooker but fridge/ freezer is small and temperature regulator does not work to get the food cold enough. Only one shower ( very small) for the house and one bath. Difficult if multiple couples are staying. Top bathroom sink leaks if emptying the basin. Very strict rules and cleaner / owner arrives 15 minutes before you should leave. Waits behind the cars as we are loading to go. quite intimidating. We enjoyed our stay but there were many niggling issues about the house being tired and user unfriendly. Needs repairs and some items replaced.

The property was clean, quiet and well-appointed. All the arrangements were clear. We had a very enjoyable stay. The beach at Chewton Bunny was a pleasant 20 minute walk; there are a couple of good pubs in easy walking distance; and it was a convenient base from which to explore the New Forest. You need to take your own towels, and there is only the one shower (downstairs). It would be a great addition to add a shower head and screen over the bath upstairs.

The location was good central to where we wanted to go. The property was a great size for us, lovely kitchen beds were good. The property could do with a deep clean, dust under beds and fur
