Amazing building in a perfect location. Appreciated the historic features like the internal mail system and photos...you could make a lot more of them though. The planting at the front was stunning.
We were not made of renovations taking place prior to our stay. Not a major thing but it's a shame there wasn't a proper bar. Our room involved a LOT of walking to get to, and we only discovered a slightly more direct route with nearer lifts later on.

It really was too expensive for a room with a bathroom that was so “ efficient” that I couldn’t even splash water on my face.

The hotel itself lives up to its' name: the location, building rooms, comfort,... it delivers on what the name and reputation implies. The main bed was really comfy.
Extra kudos for the lobby/lounge and the bar staff there (the restaurant was being renovated): extremely friendly, good advice (on both food and drinks), and an excellent seating area.
Upon arrival we were told our room was already taken (supposedly by a group we could be travelling with, which was not the case), reception staff told us they were going to figure out what went wrong and offer solutions. Those turned out to be moving into a slightly less equipped rooms (no 2 double beds as reserved) or stay in the suite and then move into the reserved room the following day. Moving on the second day of a 2 day stay did not sound appealing so we chose the first option. Upon arrival in the room the bed that would have replaced (a pull out or cot) for our grown daughter was simply not there. After returning to the lobby things were fixed eventually.
We were somewhat compensated (similar to the amount that the downgrade in rooms would have saved us if we had booked those in the first place) but it still felt like a disappointment. Mistakes can be a made, but for a reputable hotel like the Fairmont Empress one would expect them to be dealt with in a more timely and efficient manner. This all took upwards of 2 and a half hours, which is not what you are after arriving at a place with such grandeur (and a day of travelling). the next day we were offered another move to a suite, despite our indicated unwillingness to move rooms for such a short stay.
