The Neighborhood:
You’re in Oostkapelle on Walcheren, between beach, dunes and forest. Around the village are De Manteling and the Oranjezon nature reserve, with winding paths through woodland and broad dunes towards the sea. On foot or by bike you reach Kasteel Westhove and the Terra Maris museum, ideal for a morning of history and nature. The beach at Oostkapelle is great for long days by the sea and evening walks, while in Oranjezon you often see fallow deer and many birds. Cycle routes run along the coast to Domburg and Vrouwenpolder. In the mood for watersports? At Veere on the Veerse Meer, about 7 km away, you can sail or SUP. Domburg is about 4 km, Veere 7 km, Vrouwenpolder 6 km, Westkapelle 9 km and Middelburg around 12 km. So you can combine beach, nature and a day in town without long drives.
Other Things to Note:
Get up early for a loop through the Oranjezon nature reserve. Your best chance to see fallow deer and Konik horses, and the dune and forest paths are quiet then. Pick a loop that suits your pace and finish by walking onto Oostkapelle beach.
Visit Terra Maris in Oostkapelle, the museum of nature and landscape next to Kasteel Westhove. The landscape garden with the motte is fascinating and via the forest paths of De Manteling you can walk on to the beach.
Eat in Domburg at De Visbar for fresh fish; in spring there’s often Oosterschelde lobster on the menu, later in summer Zeeland mussels. Booking helps avoid waiting on busy days.
