Westkapelle is a wonderful place that invites you to linger both in summer and in winter. Westkapelle lies at the westernmost point of the Netherlands, and is surrounded by the salty water of the Westerschelde and the North Sea. If you turn around, you will see the characteristic red roofs of the village, always a fascinating picture. Most of the houses were built during the reconstruction in the 1950s. The pre-war west chapel was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War. The sea dike was bombed by the Allies in October 1944 to liberate Walcheren. The resulting bomb hole in the dike gave the sea free rein in the village, which among other things led to the creation of the large lake behind the Westkapelle.
