I stayed in Veles for 3 days (2 nights). The apartment is located in the city center. I didn’t meet the host in person, but he provided very detailed instructions - Google Maps links, a video guide, Wi-Fi passwords, and clear directions on how to find the keys. I was pleasantly surprised by the level of professionalism, comparable to what you would expect in Western Europe (and rarely seen in neighboring countries to Macedonia - even the internet connection was excellent!).
The apartment itself is basic, small but practical - everything you need for a short stay is available. It was clean and well maintained. If you are planning to visit Veles, I can warmly recommend Friends Apartments.
As for Veles itself: be sure to explore the city center and the main road that runs through it, where you’ll find several important landmarks. But my advice is to head up into the hills on both sides of the river. There you’ll discover fascinating 19th-century houses - some renovated, some still in their original state. Many belonged to notable figures from Macedonia’s socialist (and even anarchist!) past. Both hills are full of hidden gems, and the best way to find them is simply by walking and exploring without a set plan.
There’s a local saying: “You cannot get lost in Veles - just walk downhill and you’ll end up in the city center.” The houses are perched on steep slopes and the streets are so narrow that, in places, only a meter separates opposite houses. It’s a unique setting - one that (in my opinion) could even serve as an exciting course for future urban downhill cycling events!
