Palazzo Guicciardi: Living Twelve Centuries of Valtellina History

“Crossing the threshold of Palazzo Guicciardi means entering an unbreakable bond with the land.”

Guarded by our family—present in Ponte since 773 A.D. (when our ancestor Guicciardo settled here after crossing the Alps in the retinue of Charlemagne)—this noble residence, documented since 1548, has been restored to its former glory through careful conservation work. Today, it is an exceptional retreat where modern comfort meets authentic art.

The Property: Renaissance Atmospheres and Contemporary Comfort

The residence offers two distinct souls that can be enjoyed separately or combined for larger groups:

The Palazzo (Noble Wing)
The heart of hospitality, with spacious interiors that evolve with the rhythm of the seasons. On the ground floor, you will find the 17th-century Stüa (1579), entirely in wood, the Senator’s Grand Kitchen with its imposing stone fireplace, and the Green Salon overlooking the loggia. It features three bedrooms and two bathrooms.

The Fresco Rooms (May – September)
A true “livable museum” on the first floor. To preserve the precious 16th-century fresco cycles, these rooms do not have artificial heating, offering natural coolness and a timeless summer experience (Prestige configuration).

The Granary
A characterful apartment created from the former granary, connected to the main building by a glorietta spanning the street. An independent unit with contemporary design, featuring a loggia overlooking the mountains and air conditioning.

Location: Among Heroic Vineyards and Valley Trails

Located in the heart of Ponte in Valtellina—a village that has preserved its medieval and Renaissance character—the Palazzo is the perfect starting point to explore a unique territory:

The Terraced Vineyards Route (La Via dei Terrazzamenti)
A cycling and walking route that crosses the towns of the mid and lower valley at elevations between 300 and 700 meters. The best way to admire dry-stone walls (UNESCO World Heritage), vineyards, and ancient churches scattered along the Rhaetian slope.

The Sentiero Valtellina
Over 100 km of cycling and walking paths along the Adda River. A flat, safe route—ideal for families—that allows you to immerse yourself in the valley’s natural landscape.

The Bernina Red Train (UNESCO)
A short distance away for an unforgettable journey toward Swiss glaciers and St. Moritz.

Alps and Lakes
Lake Como can be reached in less than an hour, as well as some of the most famous Alpine passes. For sports enthusiasts, the Adda River offers rafting, while alpine streams are perfect for sport fishing.

Skiing and Thermal Baths
Just 20 minutes from the ski resorts of Aprica and Valmalenco, and close to the ancient thermal baths of Bormio.

Guest Notes

Outdoor Spaces
Private courtyards, the portico of the ancient wine press, and a secluded garden equipped with a barbecue.

Family Friendly
In the Palazzo, we provide a crib and high chair free of charge.

Accessibility
Due to the historic nature of the 16th-century building, there are stairs and stone passageways that are not suitable for guests with reduced mobility.

We had a wonderful stay here, in this incredibly characterful and historic house. To begin with the children found it a little overwhelming, being so old, but it was clean, warm and well equipped, and it was a perfect base for our week long holiday in this hidden away and interesting area. The kitchen was a joy to cook meals and to eat in - it felt like one had stepped into a period drama TV show! The living room was very comfortable, and the bedrooms perfectly fine. We enjoyed using the table tennis table, and the location of the house, so central in very charming Ponte in Valtellina, was great - we had the little grocery shop less than a minute's walk away, the ice cream shop two minute's walk away (although it closed for the end of the season part of the way through our stay - probably a good thing!), and various cafes, restaurants and bars within five minute's walk. The cobbled streets of Ponte are quite lovely, and the views from here absolutely spectacular. The house's location gives many opportunities for exploration - we thankfully had a car for the week - suggested drives: visit the Alpe Gera dam (the drive there is incredible, and the dam is an awesome sight); drive into Switzerland up to St. Moritz, over the Bernino Pass (much cheaper than the Bernino Express, and you can stop when you like - stop at Poschiavo for a coffee and some food, and enjoy the change in architectural style, and other contrasts, but be aware that there's nothing cheap about St. Moritz that we could find!); drive up to the Stelvio Pass, than take the cable car up to the top station (it's truly spectacular, and to watch people skiing was quite a surprise - the whole drive and visit was a highlight); explore some of the hidden valleys not far from Ponte, including the Val Fontana (you won't see many people up here, and once you've parked as far up as you can, keep on walking, as it's very beautiful). We also enjoyed visiting Tirano - the Parravicini was superb, and for great pizza, try Il Braciere. Finally, we can't thank Marco enough (our host), for his very warm greeting, and the fact that he spent nearly an house showing us around and answering all our questions. He also gave us some lovely local food and drink - the salami and honey were amazing! Thank you Marco - we highly recommend that others come and stay at your house in Ponte, especially if they want to get off the beaten track a bit.

We felt very comfortable in the house and everything was as described and expected. Thanks also to Marco for the tips where you can eat and what can look like.

We absolutely loved our time at the palazzo and in the Valtellina Valley. The home is beautiful, warm and charming, and the host is lovely and particularly helpful and attentive. We have stayed at many (many!) homes over the years and this one is especially unforgettable because of its unique beauty (this is a stately home, with beautiful furniture, large rooms, and lost of space to sprawl out and relax) as well as its undiscovered (worthy of millions of tourists, but in fact very few) location and hosts. Truly wonderful - highly recommended.
