We stayed at Hotel Fontana during our Amalfi Coast trip with our two kids, and unfortunately, the experience didn’t meet our expectations — especially compared to other places we stayed during our Italy tour. The only real advantage of this hotel is its central location, right on the main piazza and close to the ferry point, shops, and restaurants. But beyond that, the hotel fell short in several key areas. The rooms were outdated and poorly maintained. The furniture felt worn, the air conditioning struggled to keep up with the June heat, and overall, the space didn’t feel welcoming or comfortable — particularly when traveling as a family. There was a lack of attention to detail and cleanliness that you’d expect even in a basic 3-star property. Noise was a major issue. Being right on the main square means there’s constant foot traffic and activity well into the night, and with minimal soundproofing, sleep was hard to come by. Staff interaction was indifferent at best — we didn’t feel particularly welcomed or supported. Even basic queries were met with minimal effort or enthusiasm, which was disappointing considering the hospitality we received elsewhere in Italy. In fact, there wasn’t any staff at all as such. Not even for carrying the luggage up when checking in. Also, in spite of being so hot, there was no AC in the reception area. When we asked Imma about it, she said she doesn’t like it. The hospitality was definitely absent. Our room was booked for 4 people but wasn’t made. At 11 pm the reception staff who first refused making the bed, said the beds were made just needed to put pillows. Our king bed didn’t have a blanket - during our entire stay. The bed line was worn, probably used for ages. The room was partial sea view, contrary to claimed. Entire right half of our room was blocked by the hotel’s building and extension. Breakfast was very limited and underwhelming — certainly not up to the standards of other places we stayed during this trip, or for a 3 star hotel. It felt more like a box-ticking exercise than something thoughtfully offered to guests. Overall, while the location is undeniably convenient, the hotel itself lacks charm, warmth, and value for money. We wouldn’t return and wouldn’t recommend it, especially for families looking for a relaxing and enjoyable stay on the Amalfi Coast. This is not a 3 star hotel, even by standards of developing countries, certainly not by Italian standards. This is a 50 euro a night hotel in other locations but since in Amalfi, at the max it’s a 200 euro a night place. Honestly - there’s absolutely no reason of choosing this hotel. The location advantage is negligible since even when staying in Amalfi, you will actually be on the move and use this room only for sleeping - and it’s not a room you can sleep in. Absolutely can’t. On the last night, the lights went off in our room, apparently something tripped. No apologies. They took maybe half an hour or to fix it. For all this - they didn’t offer us anything, forget complimentary stay or a larger room upgrade - not even a bottle of water, didn’t clean the plates or glasses in the room either.
