Bakers Retreat is a traditional thatched cottage in the delightful village of Exton in Rutland, and is surprisingly spacious and full of character. With beams and exposed stonework throughout and bedroom fireplaces, you’ll certainly be wowed by this mid 17th-century cottage. Step straight into the large kitchen/breakfast room where you can prepare your leisurely brunch whilst deciding what to do with your day. The spacious living room is focused on the stunning, stone inglenook fireplace with open fire where you can retreat on a chilly day. The large dining room provides the setting for a special dinner and another area to relax on the large sofas. On the first floor, you have three double bedrooms, one of which boasts an en-suite shower room. Every quintessential thatched cottage needs a beautiful English garden and that’s just what Bakers Retreat has, with a patio and outdoor seating area. There is also a bike store outside, with room for 6 vertically-stored bikes.

This exclusive and picturesque village backs onto the Exton Estate which dates back to the 12th century and enjoys a fabulous village pub. The village green is the focal point and is surrounded by many stone built, 300-year-old cottages so a very pleasant place to wander. If walking is what you like to do, then this is the area for you with many footpaths leading to the rolling countryside, and is a great place to get your two wheels on the many cycle routes. The edge of Rutland Water is only 2 miles away and is a great day out for everyone; for the adrenaline seekers, have a go at sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, golf, mini golf and rock climbing. Or for the more sedate, there are many walks, great places for fishing or spotting the local birds from the bird watching centre at the nature reserves. Cycling is also very popular in the surrounding area.

The market towns of Oakham, Uppingham and Stamford are close by and they all have a range of shops, pubs, tea rooms and restaurants. Do you love history and grand houses? Then there are so many to visit and choose from within easy driving distance including Burghley House, which is famous for its international horse trials, 12 miles away. Other places to visit include Belton House, 20 miles, Belvoir Castle, 24 miles, Rockingham Castle, 16 miles, Grimsthorpe Castle, 19 miles, and Elton Hall, 19 miles away. A little further afield is Althorp House, Princess Diana’s final resting place, as well as Boughton House and Cottesbrooke Hall.

Beautiful thatched cottage in a tranquil rural location. We stayed 3 nights and enjoyed walks from the cottage to Rutland water via Empingham, visited Oakham & Stamford for the day and had a lovely family meal at the Fox & Hounds pub which is the only pub/ restuarant in the village. Evenings were spent playing games around a roaring fire - perfect break for us (3 couples)
