Runswick Bay is around a 30-minute walk away, with a gorgeous golden beach. Further to the north you have the inspiring village of Staithes, Saltburn, which is a surfer’s paradise with a Victorian pier and tram, as well as the enormous beach at Redcar. In the south you have Sandsend where the waves dramatically crash over the sea wall at high tide. Inland, you have the raw natural beauty of the North York Moors National Park, with ancient forests, rolling moorland and breath-taking scenery. Perhaps take the heritage steam train from Whitby on an adventure across the Esk Valley; there are some quaint villages to visit along the way. For those who love the water you can join a local surf school at Sandsend or Saltburn, or join a paddleboarding class in sheltered Runswick Bay. For history lovers there are a selection of museums in Whitby, as well as the nautical museum in Staithes and the mining museum in Skinningrove. Whitby Abbey and Guisborough Priory are both beautiful ruins which are picture perfect, enhanced perhaps by their frailty and that something so grand balances on the brink of existence. For children, you are within an hour from Flamingoland theme park and zoo, as well as having unbeatable traditional family fun on the beaches – exploring rockpools or having fun at one of the arcades. There is sure to be something to delight everyone, throughout all the seasons.

We had a lovely stay at Fern House. The house was clean and nicely decorated throughout. Good communication from the host. The location is ideal with lots of places to visit nearby, as well as two nice pubs within walking distance. The kitchen could do with more cooking and catering equipment (a couple of larger pans, new oven trays and a cafetière) and the bath towels were a bit small, but I believe this is the first year letting out the house and hopefully these are simple things to sort. Thank you for a very nice holiday.
