Set in the hills between Lucca and Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, Casa Tamara will suck you into the super-relaxing business of watching shifting patterns of light and colour across the Serchio valley and Apuan Alps beyond. You can start your day drinking it all in from either bedroom – both have Juliet balconies – from the large shaded terrace, the wooden table in the garden handcrafted by the owner, or even the hot tub, all of which look straight on to this glorious view. With accommodation for two to four people, the villa’s uncluttered interior, wheelchair-accessible bathroom and stair-aid also make it an option for any who struggle with mobility.
Spring, when the blossom is out, would be a particularly lovely time to visit this well-kept property – it is located on a small farm that grows fruit and vegetables – or come later to enjoy fresh cherries and other produce. If you’re artistically inclined, set up your drawing board at home or take a short drive to the 11th-century Ponte della Maddalena. Lucca isn’t far, and Pisa and Viareggio are within striking distance.
