It is a standard hostel and in terms of a bed, roof over your head and for the social aspects it is fine if that’s what you’re after. Unfortunately, my experience was let down because I booked the family room to have privacy and avoid sharing but a glitch meant I ended up with a bed in an 8 dorm room. Basically Agoda showed the room as available and I got a confirmed booking but they actually double booked the room. Of note the family room is more expensive than a shared room (albeit not by much which I assume was because of the glitch). Luckily it was just myself otherwise it could have been awkward with more guests or a family with children. I understand that something unusual happened but it would have been nice to be informed earlier in the day that there was a mixup so I could have made alternative arrangements but instead I only found out at 9pm when I checked in. By this point everywhere else had booked out. It then got worse when there was no spare bed in the room I was allocated and another occupant in the room was either on drugs or intoxicated, and was being destructive, swearing and being abusive. In the end it required the police to turn up to sort out. So this was quite a different experience than I thought I was getting when I booked a private room! I was about to give up, leave and drive home instead (3hrs away) but I ultimately ended up with a bed in a 4 person dorm room which was adequate. There’s not much the staff could have done to avoid a bad guest but 8 people in one room is also abit too much in my opinion. In terms of the room I ended up having my feedback would be: sturdier beds that don’t sway with every movement, a place to put items if you are on the top bunk (charging ports too) and individual bedside lights (so you are not woken up with other occupants turning lights on and fiddling with their gear at 1am). With respect to the common areas it’s good and social etc. In saying that it would be nice if staff enforced the 11pm quiet curfew as there were people talking outside well past midnight and also smoking near the windows to the room. You get what you pay for, there wasn’t alot of other options in Kaitaia particularly at this time of year so expectations should be managed.
