The location of this property is second to none - right on the Bund. The heritage wing of the building is genuinely beautiful, with authentic charm and timeless design. Unfortunately, the hotel appears to be dominated by the other wing, which makes the heritage side feel all the more exclusive.
If you’re going to stay here, make sure you book the heritage wing. The rooms in the newer, non-heritage section are, in my opinion, tacky, dated, and stale. They’ve tried to mimic the authentic vintage decor of the heritage building but completely missed the mark. The heritage side has beautiful hardwood floors, genuine craftsmanship, and a timeless atmosphere. The non-heritage side felt more like a tired four-star hotel in Vegas — dated soft furnishings, and even a lingering unpleasant aroma.
The breakfast buffet was a huge letdown — 3/10 at best. This was only included because we paid an extra couple hundred dollars per night, and it’s simply not worth it. Poor selection, mediocre quality, and genuinely terrible coffee. Absolutely not what you’d expect from the Waldorf brand.
Finally, service was inconsistent and often poor. Many staff members struggled with English, even basic serving staff. Smiles were rare, and truly helpful service was rarer still.
