About this house rental

The House
It’s old, quirky, and not perfectly straight, but it’s home. The house has 3 Bedrooms + 1 sleeping loft (2 King beds, 1 Queen, 1 Double), 3 En-suite Baths + 1 additional bath in the cave. The main spaces include a Kitchen with Dining for 10, Salon living space, office, and Roof Terrace. There is also a newly renovated Cave – a gaming lounge, jam space, and painting studio.

Getting to Know Montferrat
We highly recommend a stroll around town on your first day to get a feel for the area. In town, you will find the ‘Centre Ville’ with a café, a bar, a small store, and Le Bastide restaurant. Check the doors for hours of operation, and keep in mind: stores in France are closed between 12 and 2.
Up and down the street you’ll find La Poste, the town office (Mairie), the Mediatheque (library), and event boards. Take a hike up to the church you see from the terrace – paths are marked and easy to follow. We’ve included additional details for the path at the end of this package. We also recommend an 8-minute walk to the waterfalls (Cascade de Pierrepont), found on Google Maps.

Good Eats
We can help stock a few basics depending on when you arrive – just let us know!
The boulangerie in town is outstanding – try everything. There are two bars: one privately owned, and the other run by locals. Le Bastide is a newly renovated hotel with seasonal, local dishes – a reservation is helpful but often not necessary. Monfe Pizza, across from Le Pension, is perfect for something simple when you're tired.
Nearby markets are in various towns on different days. Montferrat has a tiny market, but Bargemon and Draguignan have larger, excellent markets. Montferrat also has a small grocery store for basics and local wines, open daily.
There are wonderful dining spots in neighboring villages like Figanières, Callas, Seillans, Bargemon, Flayosc, Tourtour, and Cotignac. Dining here is an event, starting after 7 pm and lasting hours. Reservations are preferred.
In Draguignan (the largest local city), you’ll find two Carrefour grocery stores. The cheese and wine sections are worth the visit! The region is known for its award-winning Rosé, and you’ll find Petite Casinos in Montferrat, Bargemon, and Figanières for essentials. Remember to bring your own bags (there’s a stash in the pantry).

Kitchen Notes
Please review the kitchen equipment and supplies instructions upon arrival. There’s a washer and dryer at the back of the kitchen wall, with detergent and bleach in the pantry.
Don’t put anything suspect down the sink to avoid clogs. There are containers next to the dryer for trash and recyclables, which should be dropped off at local sites.
The hot water comes from a boiler in winter and an electric heater in summer – both are very efficient (be cautious). The gas cooktop uses Butagaz, and there’s a spare container in the Cave. If not, you can buy a replacement at the gas station outside of town. For the dishwasher, please clean off plates before placing them inside to avoid clogging the filter.
Help yourselves to the supplies in the kitchen.

Getting Clean (or Dirty)
Cleaning is scheduled after departure, but we can arrange mid-stay cleaning if preferred. The washer and dryer are available for use, and instructions are provided.
Be careful about what goes down the sink. Trash and recyclables need to be taken to the designated drop-off sites around town.
Everything you need for the kitchen is available, so feel free to use the supplies.

Welcome to Provence!
Montferrat is centrally located in Provence, the Var, and Cote D’Azur. To the north, you’ll find the Gorge du Verdon and Lac St. Croix. South leads to St. Tropez, St. Raphael, and Frejus beaches. West are Aix en Provence, Avignon, and the Luberon villages, and east is Grasse, Nice, Cannes, and Monaco.
Make sure to carry cash for toll roads (4-12 Euros) and small change for parking meters. Toll booths accept cash, change, and chip credit cards. ATM machines are available in most towns.

Suggested Day Trips

Moustiers Ste. Marie: Travel north via D71 through Gorge du Verdon. Continue around Lac St. Croix to the village of St. Croix for lakeside dining and boat rides.
Fayence: Take D19 for a walking tour of the town with 360-degree valley views, great lunch spots, and a mid-July antique market. Stop by Bargemon on the way back, which also has a public pool (brochure in the basket next to the door).
Chateau Double: A cliffside village only 2 km from Montferrat with a few restaurants. Walk up to the ruins at the top and check out the fresh cheese farm. Continue to Tourtour and Cotignac – many guests love these villages for their charming shops and restaurants.
Draguignan: The largest local city, great for shopping, dining, and quaint streets.
Vineyards: The region has 27,000 vineyards! Chateau D’Eclans (famous for Whispering Angel Rosé), Domaine Ott, and Chateau Berne are some options. Chateau Berne also offers a lovely lunch spot.
Shopping & Antiques
Antique lovers should visit L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (2 hours away) for over 300 flea market stalls. If in the area, St. Remy-de-Provence, Aix, Old Nice, and Cannes are great for shopping.

Beaches & Sun
The Mediterranean beaches are 35 minutes away. Frejus beaches are easiest to reach and less crowded than St. Tropez, though the latter is worth visiting if you don’t mind the traffic. All beaches are lined with restaurants, but expect higher prices for food. The house provides beach chairs, green towels, umbrellas, and panniers.

Festivals
France has countless festivals year-round, especially in July and August. Check local event boards or visit Visit Var Festivals and Montferrat Events for more details on events.

The Church on Montferrat Hilltop
To reach Notre Dame du Beauvoir, start at the town center and take the right fork at the ‘Y’. Continue past Le Pension, and follow the marked path to the left. The path zigzags up to the church, offering beautiful views along the way.

Host in Canada was helpful and responsive. Mgr on site also friendly and helpful. Home is lovely and well furnished. Not suitable for anyone with mobility issues as all bedrooms are upstairs. We got our exercise!! Be aware, if you have multiple pieces of luggage, there is no parking at the unit but it’s nearby down the hill. People in the village were friendly and welcoming. We were easily included in the Saturday evening parties in the square. Make sure you speak some French or have a translator app on your phone. We had a lovely time

We spent a memorable two weeks with our two young-adult daughters in this beautiful home in the charming hilltop village of Montferrat. As other guests have commented, the house is decorated to a high standard, has every comfort and is spotlessly clean. We loved cooking in the very well-equipped, open kitchen and eating at the large table in the dining room on the ground floor, but what we particularly enjoyed was sitting on the roof top terrace, sipping rose and soaking in the 360 degree view and watching the soaring swallows in the evening. All the essentials like paper towels, dishwasher detergent, napkins and bathroom tissue are there for a good start. There were even picnic essentials like insulted picnic bags and picnic plates and plastic cups, folding chairs and a picnic umbrella are on hand. Lot of fun DVDs for the late evening after full days of touring. The townspeople were welcoming and curious about 'Les Canadiens'. We shopped at the bakery and surprisingly well-stocked grocery store and drank espresso at the bar opposite the main square. One evening there was a band in the square with tables set out and dancing. We felt so privileged to have such an intimate, inside view of French village life. For large shopping days, we went to Carrefour in Draguignan. Be sure to visit the wine aisles. There are wonderful wines available in 2.5 litre boxes. Get the higher end ones and you won't be disappointed. Guy, the owner, is an excellent communicator and makes the whole process run smoothly. He left tons of information about the house, town and surrounding area. Sylvain, his local contact, is charming, helpful and also an excellent communicator. He speaks almost no French but we all understood each other perfectly. He was always available, although we really didn't need to avail ourselves of his services. We have recommended La Renardiere to interested friends and will surely return, ourselves. Our only complaint is that two weeks wasn't nearly enough to both see the many sights nearby and relax more on the rooftop terrace and just enjoy the town. Next time we will book for 4 weeks. All in all, an unforgettable holiday.

We were three couples in our sixty and stayed at the Renardière from Sept 27th to Oct 4Th. The house surpassed all of our expectations. It is beautifully decorated, ultra clean and has all accessories you may need from kitchen utensils to laundry soap and wood for the fireplace. There are 3 rooms all on separate floor and each with its own peculiarity. We had the top unit but count 45 stairs to go up!!! Better not to forget anything. Sylvain the housekeeper is at your service during the whole stay. He greets you with a warm welcome and tours the property explaining everything. Should you need anything he is there to help you. The only caveat is that if you have mobility problem this property is probably not for you.The whole is way better than on the picture. In town do not miss the restaurant La Voute. The owner Guy and his wife Mercedes are simply adorable and the food exquisite and reasonably priced. Anyone we met in the village was nice to us and seemed to appreciate our business. There is a good cafe/tobacco store where they serve a super expresso or for those with a more delicate palate and creamy cappuccino. The grocery store has everything you may need and the small bakery has fresh bread and croissant daily. We went to la Bastide des Moines and truly enjoyed our buffet style meal. Contrary to comments on trip advisor we found we had good value for a fix price of 25 euros although the wine was very ordinary. Jacqueline at the restaurant le Relais will greet you with excellent family dining. The location is ideal to visit les Gorges du Verdon, St-Maxime for its boutique and restaurant, St-Tropez for its glamour, Callas for its olive oil, Draguignan, Chateau Ste-Roseline for its excellent wine and the beach of Tahiti not to be missed although on the expensive side. Finally dealing with the owner was smooth and efficient and his contract is clearly written. Once payment has been made you will receive all the infos you need to truly enjoy your stay. Thanks for keeping such a beautiful property available to us. It is truly a gem in Provence.
