When we found the house on the vrbo site, it appeared to be just what we wanted: the reviews from people who had previously stayed at the house were mostly positive, with just one expressing disappointment. I wish I had taken that one more seriously, as our stay in the house was also far from what we had expected. The house is certainly in a perfect seaside setting; however, there was so much wrong with the actual accommodation, including a bedroom with a damp-ridden wall and an ever-present musty smell - the damp was also on the living room wall; toilets that smelled of urine when we arrived; a fridge with rust and excess condensation and little storage; towels and sheets that we had paid extra for that were poor quality; pillows that were so old and flat that we had to buy new ones from the supermarket; and a spiral staircase leading to children's bedrooms that was rickety. There were other disappointments, but the owner was difficult to approach with any concerns - she chose to chastise me for example for putting washed plastic containers in
the recycling bin, and was very keen to tell us that we have to pay for any electricity we used. We are sad that our memories of this holiday will be so mixed - lovely location, but poor accommodation.
