About this farm stay rental

Above the tiny hamlet of San Giovanni del Pantano lies Gudiolo di Sopra. Set amongst olive trees and lavenders the carefully restored XV century tower and house, with a saltwater swimming pool, enjoys stunning views of distant fields and valleys.
The house is spacious and full of light. In the sitting room, cool breezes pass through the open doors that lead to the garden and tower. The kitchen is fully equipped with an adjoining dining room (for 12). Lunch and dinners are usually served outside (one table seats 6, the other 12). A variety of outdoor seating areas surround the house offering privacy and silence. A loggia by the tower offers a relaxing space to watch the sunset. A lounge area outside the dining room offers the confort of a living room while enjoying the breathtaking views. An organic vegetable garden provides seasonable salads and vegetables and the estate also produces its own biological olive oil. The only little shop in the village offers typical gourmet products from local farmers. Just 1.5 kilometers away, Antognolla Castle overlooks the 18-hole championship golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones J.

Customise your holiday! We can plan each day of your vacation. Every step will bring you closer to the heart of Umbria, its traditions, its history, art and culture.

You can let us guide you through our favourite towns and villages: go to the steep and sleepy town of Spello, taking your time over lunch, and enjoy a leisurely take a slow journey discovering the works of Piero della Francesca, from Arezzo to Urbino.

Or again, stick closer to home: enjoy a morning hunting for wild asparagus or funghis in the woodlands near the house. Learn how to make your own gnocchi with a nonna from the village.

At the end of each day, dinner can be waiting for you in Gudiolo. You can spend the evening drinking Umbrian wines and savoring traditional dishes, whilst planning the following day or expand your knowledge of the art and history you experienced during your day by discussing it at dinner with a local expert.

Rates on request (including breakfast, dinner, transportation in a minibus and pick-up from airport if required).

Gudiolo is an idyllic spot, something you'd expect to see in a movie rather than somewhere you'd actually get to stay. The property and grounds are stunning, giving you a taste of living in Umbria hundreds of years ago. The house is beautifully restored and accessorized in a way that feels like it could have been hundreds of years ago. Madeleine, her family, friends and dogs couldn't have been friendlier or more accomodating. Madeleine and her son made us a scrumptious multi-course meal our first night, just after we arrived from a long day of travelling. Madeleine also was very helpful in coordinating other meals at the house and in recommending restaurants and other places to visit. Madeleine's dogs Alma and Apollo (and their sidekick Hector) were welcome companions as we read outside or took walks. If you're looking for a special place with a special owner, I couldn't recommend Gudiolo and Madeleine more highly!

The property was lovely a stunning location. Waking up to the views each morning was delightful. The property itself was comfortable and everything you need. A real home from home.

Our stay at Gudiolo was magical. The house was full of character and comfortable with all the amenities: terraces, scenic views from every window and plenty of spacious, well appointed rooms. Our host, Madeleine was lovely: welcoming, extremely knowledgeable and solicitous. We spent nearly three weeks at Gudiolo; the access to hill towns in Umbria and Tuscany make this setting especially desirable. We were able to take many day trips, hike, swim in the pool below the house and enjoy evenings with Madeleine's lovely family as they came and went around the dinner table and fire pit. An memorable vacation in unforgettable environs

Wow, what a fantastic week in Umbria. To say that Gudiolo was intriguing & unique would be a gross understatement. Picture yourself in a farmhouse tastefully restored to preserve it's hundreds of years old pedigree while providing many of the creature comforts we all demand on vacations. Commanding panoramic views of rolling countrysides and patchwork farmland dominate the horizon. Truly magical. Let's back up a bit though to give you a thorough review of the property, it's host and the whole Umbrian experience. We arrived late afternoon in Rome and rented a car. Be aware that renting a car in Europe is a lot different than in N.A. No walk out & hop in. More like take a number at the counter and wait, wait & wait some more. There are many reviews covering the rental experience in Rome, most bad. However, to be fair, our counter wait was only a 1/2 hour and the counter staff were really nice. They were out of the car category we reserved but did provide a decent replacement with navigation. I highly recommend you get nav as getting around the many alleys, roadways & laneways in Italy demand a savant's touch. As a result we weren't able to reach Gudiolo until after 9 o'clock. But, no worries, our host Madeleine had left the door open & lights on so it was a simple matter of moving in, picking our bedrooms, having a glass of wine & crashing for the night. A little about our hosts... There are 2 houses on their property, both fantastic transformations of rustic farmhouses. Though Madeleine does travel, she lives in one of the homes with her dogs; Atlas, Alma & Nero. Madeleine could not be more helpful; she basically reviewed what we had planned to explore in Umbria, tweaked the itinerary to maximize the experience and provided lots of history. She called to confirm reservations, gave directions etc. - she was like our own knowledgable tour guide always quick with an anecdote. One of the highlights of our vacation was a special luncheon at friends of hers that have a fantastic retreat close to Gubbio. We invited Madeleine, her significant other Mark & brother Rolando and they graciously accepted. It was a memorable day that included a spectacular drive there, a personal tour from the owners, a luncheon to remember with many stories about the history of the area & build of that property. Back to Gudiolo - Madeleine's dogs, they are fantastic. They took us on hikes through the countryside, always nudging us along on the right trail. They came by the house often
