Disappointing Self-Service Experience, Poor Communication & Hidden Charges
We stayed at Al Campanile Hotel in Naples for three nights, and our experience was far from what we expected. Nowhere on Agoda, where we booked our stay, were we informed that this was a self-service hotel. We only discovered upon arrival that the hotel operates without any on-site reception staff, which was contrary to the advertisement. Instead, we needed access codes to enter every level – the main entrance, the hotel entrance on the second floor, and our room. No instructions were provided in advance, and we were left relying on WhatsApp to connect with the hotel.
Navigating the check-in process was a challenge. The QR code provided on site required a code we didn’t have, as our only information was the Agoda booking number. Calling the provided WhatsApp number directed us to an automated service in Italian, which quickly hung up without connecting us to a representative. Eventually, we managed to check in through WhatsApp messaging, as they responded only by text, which delayed our check-in and added a lot of stress.
The location itself was also misleading on the map, and finding it was challenging. Once we arrived, we discovered that to access the elevator, we had to carry our luggage up a set of stairs since the elevator starts on a level above ground. Additionally, check-in was set at 3 pm, later than the standard 2 pm we’ve experienced at other hotels. To add to the inconvenience, checkout was firmly at 10 am. On our last day, the cleaning staff knocked exactly at 10 am and gave no allowance for even a few extra minutes, despite us explaining we were ready to leave.
On top of the high city tax and unexpected cleaning fees, I was shocked to be charged an additional 200 euros for a “deposit,” which I was told would only be refunded 14 working days after checkout for credit card payments, or 25-30 days for debit/prepaid cards. This amount, along with the city tax and cleaning fee, totaled 282 euros, a significant unexpected cost at check-in.
This stay was not worth the hassle, hidden fees, and poor communication. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone expecting a traditional hotel experience or even basic hospitality.
